Welcome to the Yoknapatawpha Art Council presents Save the Arts

Our goal is simple: To raise awareness about the importance of art in grade school and to raise money for the Oxford School District art program. Through our two main events, The Square Museum and the Silence is Golden Auction, we hope to raise over $15,000. This website will be your stop for any updates about the campaign. We understand that everyone can not afford to give to every noble cause. Times are hard. What we ask of everyone is to spread the word. The more people who hear about Save the Arts, the better our chances are to reach 15,000. Help us Save the Arts for the next generation.

YAC SAVES THE ARTS IN SILENCE

Oxford, MS- The Yoknapatawpha Art Council will hold the first ever Silence is Golden: Auction for the Arts on Saturday February 10th at the Powerhouse. “Silence is Golden” is a silent auction benefitting the Oxford School District’s art programs. It is also the grand finale to the Art Council’s Save the Arts Campaign.
The Invitation only event will consist of a dinner, live music and of course, a silent auction. The event will raise $50 per plate in addition to the revenue from all items donated to the auction. An Ole Miss Football jersey signed by the 2011 team, 3 paintings from local artist Johnny Painter, and a 2008 presidential debate banner will be just a few of the items available.
“This has been a great process for everyone involved. We have been preparing for this auction for more than six months. We are ready to see it succeed,” YAC director Wayne Andrews said on Wednesday.
Save the Arts was officially launched on October 1st with the Square Museum fundraiser that rose over $5000 for Oxford School District.
“It is just incredible to see all of this come together. A few months ago it was just a project for my Journalism class,” campaign creator Scott Fuller said.

ART COUNCIL PREPARES FOR THE FIRST “Save the Arts: Square Museum"

OXFORD, MS- The Yoknapatawpha Arts Council will be presenting the first “Save the Arts” art show the Saturday benefitting the art programs of Oxford/Lafayette public school systems.
Over the last month, students in local public elementary, secondary and high school have been creating their own pieces of art to be hung on the square. The square will be transformed into a huge museum featuring student made paintings, drawings, sculptures, collages, and even trading cards. In addition to student art, local artists Tom Painter, John Sculptor, and Johnny Drawsalot will also donate a piece of art for sale. Local restaurants will be offering special deals for those attending the event. At night, Rooster’s bar and grill and Taylor’s Pub will be featuring local music by Silas Reed and the Books and Trey Lyons. There will be a $5 cover charge that will go directly to “Save the Arts”.
“Save the Arts” is designed to educate Oxford residents on the importance of the arts. Studies show that students who participate in art programs are three times more likely to hold a position in student government and four times more likely to receive awards for academic achievement.
“Art is an extremely important part of a student’s education. Sadly, art funding is being slashed statewide”, said Wayne Andrews, director of YAC
Andrews and the art council sponsor 315 events every year all over north Mississippi and Memphis.
“Keeping art in schools is something that Y.A.C. will always support. The kids of Mississippi deserve that much”, Andrews explained.
Save the Arts will begin at 10 A.M. on Saturday October 22nd. Exhibits will be taken down at 5 p.m. For more information visit Oxfordart.com
